and development of disciplines and established a discipline construction-oriented
ideology, under which reform in the discipline system has been actively
and stably promoted, discipline-based administration has been fully implemented
and more importance has been attached to supporting the disciplines that
have their own features. So far, the University has 31 disciplines, out
of which 2 are key disciplines at the provincial level, 3 are key disciplines
greatly supported by the provincial government, and 11 others are within
the category of key disciplines of the University. Some of the disciplines

2. Scientific Research
In
recent years, the scope of the University has been increasingly expanded
and the level of the University has been increasingly raised. Within the
University, the number of projects and the fund for research has increased
year by year. So far, the University has had 27 institutes (research units)
and assumed nearly 500 projects, out of which more than 50 are sponsored
by the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Social Science
Foundation, subprojects of 863 subprojects of 973, Projects of 948, projects
of international cooperation, key projects of the Ministry of Education,
etc. Since 1998, 74 projects have passed appraisals, two inventions has
been patented, two projects has been awarded national prizes, 31 prizes
either at the ministerial or provincial levels have been obtained, nearly
2,000 academic papers have been published at home and abroad, and over
120 textbooks or professional works have been published. In 2002, our
University
topped all the forestry colleges and universities throughout the country
in published academic papers that had been included in SCI. Since 2000,
the disposable fund for scientific research has been close to 50 million
yuan. In recent years, more than 120 development projects have been completed,
which have brought about economic benefits valued at 1.956 billion yuan.
For a long time, the scientific research conducted by the University has
been focused on problems concerning the rural area, agriculture and farmers
as well as ecological constructions. A number of research achievements
combining fundamental research with applied research as well as serving
our province have been made in the fields concerning regional economic
development and ecological construction. Our University has our own features
and edges in s uch
fields as resources, cultivation, processing and utilization of bamboo,
studies on selection, breeding and cultivation of such non-wood species
as hickory, dogwood, red bayberry and Chinese torreya, studies on superior
varieties and standardization of woody medicinal plants (flowering plants),
techniques for directional breeding of timber species for industrial purposes,
studies on bamboo charcoal and bamboo vinegar, studies on techniques for
processing of bamboo culm and timber, studies on equipment for timber
drying, studies on protection of forest resource diversity and capitalized
management of forest resources, studies on environmental law, urban greening,
remodeling of forest landscape, garden planning and designs, and urban
forestry.

3. Development, Consultation and
Service of Science and Technology
Since the establishment
of the University, great importance has been attached to the overall quality
including upgrading of both teachers and students, full play to our own
edges in S & T, active provision of S & T service, and active
implementation of activities in social practice, all of which have benefited
the overall development of forestry in the mountainous regions and poverty
alleviation of farmers. The University has established a close cooperation
relationship in S & T with more than 40 cities, counties (regions)
and over 100 townships in such 11 provinces as Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian,
Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan and Anhui, organized or participated in exchanges,
consultation in S & T, provision of S & T for farmers, conversion
of S & T achievements, technical guidance and extension, nurturing
and training of talents, etc. all of which have strengthened contact and
cooperation among the University, governments and departments at different
levels and farmers, with good economic, social and ecological effects
obtained.
